The good news is you don’t have to travel very far to satisfy those cravings. Vaughan’s food scene is serving up plenty of viral-worthy bites, from indulgent desserts and loaded sandwiches to creative drinks and desserts that have created social media buzz. So much so that foodies and experimenters go out of their way to give ‘em a try. Here are just some of the viral ‘eats and treats’ that you can seek out in Vaughan this summer.
The sweet side of going viral
First up is Nonna Lia, a GTA-famous tiramisu brand. You can pick up or enjoy it at Hot Spot Bubble Tea (9591 Weston Rd.). They are famous for their giant 8-inch tiramisu tubs in flavours like Pistachio and Raspberry. We keep hearing that it’s smooth, rich and creamy. If you read internet reviews, it’s clear this is one of the best tiramisus you can buy!
Loukoumades, Greek fried honey dough balls, have gone viral as a globally trending dessert, capturing attention on TikTok and Instagram for being crispy on the outside, fluffy and “cloud-like” on the inside, dripping with honey or customizable sauces, and sprinkled with various candy toppings. In Vaughan you can find them at Loukoumania Café (3120 Rutherford Rd.). Vegetarian options are available too!
Looking for a new viral sensation to try out? Try Cappadocia Cafe and Bakery (9000 Weston Rd.). This Turkish spot has gained massive traction on TikTok and Instagram over the past few years for its expansive spreads including their viral Dubai chocolate desserts and, most notably, their kunafa fried kataif dessert soaked in syrup. Beyond those, they offer a wide variety of visually elaborate Turkish treats and a wonderful coffee service. And it’s 100 per cent Halal!
A croffle? What’s a croffle? Well, if you’re as intrigued as we are, check out the many viral posts about them. A croffle is half croissant and half waffle – a pastry hybrid made by pressing buttery pre-made croissant dough into a hot waffle iron to create crispy caramelized edges with a soft, flaky, rich interior. You can find them in Vaughan at Sugar Hill Desserts (9100 Jane St.). This viral sensation originated in Ireland, exploded across South Korea and became a global internet craze. Need proof? Don’t wait and don’t waffle – just croffle!
Meals worth posting about
Once a quiet neighbourhood spot, the internet hype transformed Penelope Social (125 Hawkview Blvd.) into a wildly popular viral sensation. The restaurant gained massive traction across TikTok and Instagram for its over-the-top brunch presentations, specialty cocktails, overstuffed sourdough focaccia sandwiches, New York-style pizzas and extravagant desserts. In addition to tasting great, these dishes are designed for visual impact.
(9100 Jane St.) Pür and Simple (130 Windflower Gate is a popular and trendy brunch spot that frequently generates buzz on social media. It is widely considered one of the top breakfast destinations in the GTA, with aesthetically pleasing food such as loaded pancake stacks, colourful breakfast platters, avocado lox and its “Beef Me Up Scotty” omelette. Yeah, you just have to try it for yourself.
Fresh Burger (3300 Rutherford Rd.) has a little something called Cheeseburger Poutine. It’s highly regarded as a popular, viral menu item across the GTA. This item features their signature hand-cut Belgian-style fries, rich gravy, real cheese curds and a fresh 100 per cent Angus beef patty broken up and mixed into the dish. On social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok, local food creators and fans frequently showcase Cheeseburger Poutine, highlighting the heavy cheese portions and the savory combination of the beef and fries. It’s a “must-try” comfort food.
